REFERENCE RESET · v0.1.5 · DESKTOP CHROME
How to install and use Reference Reset for Midjourney.
From the ZIP download to your first scan, with the exact icon to click and what each control means.
Install the extension in desktop Chrome.
You need Chrome on a computer and access to your own Midjourney account. This early-access ZIP is installed manually; it is not a Chrome Web Store listing or a Mac app installer.
- Download Reference Reset v0.1.5 and extract the ZIP.
- Move the extracted Reference-Reset-v0.1.5 folder somewhere you will keep it. Chrome uses these files, so do not delete or move the folder after loading it.
- Type
chrome://extensionsinto Chrome’s address bar and press Return or Enter. - Turn on Developer mode, then click Load unpacked.
- Select the extracted folder containing
manifest.json. Select the folder, not the ZIP and not the manifest file itself. - Open Chrome’s puzzle-piece Extensions menu. Pin Reference Reset for Midjourney if you would like its button beside the address bar.
The extension asks for active-tab access, scripting and local storage. It does not ask for your Midjourney password or an API key. Read the permission explanations.
Click the little image icon at the left of the prompt.
Open the Midjourney tab where you normally type a prompt and make sure you are signed in. At the top-left of the prompt box, find the small image-and-plus icon . Hover over it: the tooltip says Add images. Click that icon.
This expands your uploaded images underneath the prompt, on the same page. There is no separate library page to open. You do not need to upload a new file.

Look for the tile labelled Upload a file or drop it here and the thumbnails beside it. If they are already visible, leave the panel open. The image chips attached to a prompt are not the uploads grid.
Now click Reference Reset in Chrome’s Extensions menu, then Open reference cleaner. The cleaner opens on the right of your Midjourney page. Opening it does not remove anything.

Scan the library and review what is loaded.
- Keep the uploads panel open, then click Scan library in the cleaner.
- Read the currently loaded reference count.
- Expand Preview loaded references to see a sample of up to 12 images.
- Check that this is the uploads library you intended to clear. Keep original copies of any reference images you may want again.
Scanning does not delete anything. The preview is a sample, not a selection tool. The current version removes the first available loaded entries, rather than letting you select particular images. For a few specific images, use Midjourney’s own individual controls instead.
A loaded count is not necessarily your whole account’s upload history. Midjourney may load additional entries as the panel changes. A large “removed with this tool” total is your locally saved cumulative count, not the number about to be removed.
Choose a batch, confirm, then start.
- 25 references, then stop: the smallest preset; a bounded first batch for entries you are happy to remove.
- 50 or 75 references, then stop: intermediate batches for a more gradual cleanup.
- 100 references, then stop: a larger batch once you have checked the behaviour.
- Entire uploaded reference library: continues through available entries until none are detected or the run pauses. This is not a guarantee that every older upload has been loaded.
Type the phrase matching the selected batch: REMOVE 25, REMOVE 50, REMOVE 75 or REMOVE 100. Only the entire-library option uses REMOVE ALL. Changing the batch clears the typed confirmation. Then click Start clearing.
Adjust the pause between removals
Choose 0.1 to 2.0 seconds in 0.1-second steps. New installations start at 1.0 second; your choice is remembered. The pause is additional to page-response time and a separate 0.75-second stable-removal check. Stop before changing it. If the library is jerky, try a longer pause.
A thumbnail must stay gone before it is counted. If a counted image returns, the cleaner reduces the count conservatively and stops instead of retrying automatically. Newly loaded entries with the same image URL can also trigger that pause. Counts describe observed page changes, not server-confirmed deletion; historical totals may contain earlier miscounts.
Removal may not be undoable. Start only with entries you intend to remove. Keep the Midjourney tab in front and avoid clicking elsewhere while it runs.
Stopping and checking the result
Click Stop to prevent the next removal from being queued. An action already sent may still finish. The cleaner pauses if you change tabs, interact elsewhere on the page or it detects a relevant error.
When a batch finishes, review the result and scan again before another batch. When no loaded references remain, refresh Midjourney, click the Add images icon again and scan to check whether older uploads have appeared. Do not assume the library is empty just because one scan reached zero.
Early access: synthetic tests exercise the controls and safeguards. A live removal trial of this release has not been completed as part of this publication. Midjourney can change its interface; if expected controls cannot be recognised, stop and report the message.
Reference Reset troubleshooting
It says to open the uploads library first.
Stay on the Midjourney prompt page. Click the small image icon at the top-left of the prompt—the tooltip says Add images. Keep the panel containing “Upload a file or drop it here” visible, then click Scan library again. If an older version still shows the vague message, follow the update steps below.
The icon is there, but I cannot see my uploaded images.
Allow Midjourney to finish loading and check that you are signed in to the intended account. The uploaded-reference grid appears below the prompt’s attachment areas. If the panel is empty, there may be no loaded uploads to clear. Do not use generated-artwork Trash as a substitute.
Chrome cannot load the extension.
Extract the ZIP first and select the folder with manifest.json directly inside it. Check that Developer mode is on at chrome://extensions. Managed work or school browsers may prevent unpacked extensions; contact their administrator rather than bypassing that policy.
The Start clearing button is unavailable.
Scan the open uploads panel first, then enter REMOVE ALL in capitals, with a single space. Opening the cleaner alone is not enough to enable removal.
The layout changed, a menu failed, or Midjourney asked for a pause.
Stop. Close any open reference menu and check the visible message. For a temporary loading issue, refresh the page and open Add images again before scanning. For a rate limit, wait before trying again. Repeatedly retrying is not a fix for an unrecognised layout; send the version and exact message to support.
Can I use this on my phone, Safari or Firefox?
This release is provided for desktop Chrome. The mobile Chrome apps do not support this unpacked-extension installation process. Safari, Firefox and other browsers have not been validated for this release.
Update or remove an existing installation.
Stop any running batch first. To keep using the same extension installation, extract the new ZIP and replace the files inside the folder you originally loaded. At chrome://extensions, click the Reload arrow on Reference Reset’s card. Refresh Midjourney, reopen Add images, and open the cleaner again. Confirm that both the popup and cleaner show v0.1.5.
Do not load a second copy from a different folder unless you intend to create another installation with separate local progress. The removed total belongs to the existing extension’s local storage; removing the extension clears that stored data.
To uninstall, click Remove on its card at chrome://extensions, then refresh Midjourney to close the injected cleaner. Uninstalling does not restore previously removed reference entries.
